Grievance Updates

A couple of grievances are important to highlight. Both are with Hanover School Division.

  1. In November 2020, the province announced that school divisions were to add three nonteaching days to their school calendars. Hanover School Division added November 10, November 30, and December 7. Despite requests to employ and pay educational assistants on those days, Hanover declined. CLAC has long made the case that educational assistants do not have enough time in their workday to complete many crucial tasks, and also that they need more training, and that they need to be part of the educational team. Two of the added nonteaching days were in the same pay period, creating financial hardship for EAs, who could have been working and doing alternate duties.
  2. CLAC filed a grievance stating that Hanover has failed to provide adequate safety training for educational assistants. EAs work hands on with the highest needs students, often experiencing verbal and physical violence. CLAC is seeking some basic, consistent training for members to lessen the harmful risks of experiencing this violence.
