Thursday, October 1, 2026 Finding the Bright Spots in the Colder Months Make plans, stay connected, and create moments worth looking forward to. Newsletters As the days get shorter and the temperatures start to drop, it’s a good time to remember how important it is to nurture the parts of life that happen outside of work. Another Manitoba winter will be here before we know it, and while the colder months can be beautiful, they can also feel long, dark, and isolating at times. One way to make the season a little brighter is to intentionally make room for fun, connection, and things to look forward to. They don’t have to be big plans or expensive outings. Sometimes the simplest moments are the ones that shine the brightest. In the fall, that might mean taking a walk to enjoy the changing leaves, visiting a farmers’ market or craft sale, going for a scenic drive, checking out a local fall festival, having a bonfire, trying a new soup or baking recipe, decorating for the season, or getting together with friends for coffee or tea. And when winter settles in, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the season. Go skating or sledding, take a winter walk, try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, visit a holiday market, plan a movie marathon or game night, make a favourite comfort meal, tackle a puzzle, start a new book or hobby, cheer on a local sports team, or invite someone over for a warm drink and a visit. Even putting a dinner with friends, a weekend outing or a cozy night at home on the calendar can give you something to anticipate. Of course, winter isn’t always easy. Less daylight, cold temperatures, and long stretches indoors can affect our mood and energy. That makes it even more important to stay connected with the people we care about and make time for activities that bring us joy, rest, and a change of pace. So, as we brace ourselves for another cold Manitoba winter, consider this a little reminder: make plans, find reasons to get out of the house, stay connected, and give yourself things to look forward to. Call a friend, try something new, revisit a favourite tradition, or simply embrace a cozy evening at home. A little fun and connection can go a long way toward making the colder months feel warmer.
