Every day and night, a fleet of temperature-controlled transport trucks heads out from Buy-Low’s large warehouse to deliver groceries, meat, and produce safely and efficiently. The warehouse is located in the Foothills Industrial Park in southeast Calgary. From this central location, many of the products are delivered by 27 owner-operator truck drivers, who are also Local 56 members with Associated Grocers, a division of Buy-Low. Some of the truckers have over 30 years’ experience driving through all kinds of weather, across vast stretches of diverse terrain, and often through the night for overnight delivery service. Local 56 has represented the 90 warehouse employees since the early ’90s when it was operated under a different ownership group called Linkfast. The members working in the warehouse pick and pack the items and load the trailers. Together with the drivers, they’re delivering the goods for thousands of families shopping at independent grocery stores throughout western Canada.
