Confronting a Bully

5 Things to Do If You're Being Bullied

1. Tell the bully what behavior is inappropriate. Make it clear the behaviour is unwanted and unacceptable, and firmly tell him or her to stop. You can ask a supervisor or union steward to be with you when you approach the person.

2. Keep a factual journal or diary of daily events. Record the date, time, and what happened in as much detail as possible. Include the names of witnesses. Record the outcome of the event. Keep copies of any texts, emails, or other correspondence received from the person.

3. Remember, it is not just the character of the incidents, but the number, frequency, and especially the pattern that can reveal bullying.

4. Report the bullying to your supervisor or a delegated manager. If your concerns are ignored or minimized, talk to your steward or representative.

5. Do not retaliate. You may end up looking like the perpetrator and will most certainly cause confusion for the people who are evaluating and responding to the situation.
