CLAC extends its congratulations to premier-elect Doug Ford and Ontario’s new Progressive Conservative government. (Here is a riding-by-riding breakdown of results from Thursday’s vote.)
We want all CLAC members across Ontario to be assured that, while the government has changed, your priority issues remain the same. We will continue to advocate for change and improvement in several key areas affecting you and your fellow members.
· Fair and Open Tendering
CLAC will be calling on the new government to fix the loophole in labour legislation that allows restrictions on who can work on public industrial institutional and commercial (ICI) projects.
· Concerns with Ontario’s New Personal Support Worker (PSW) Agency
We welcome Mr. Ford’s promise of 30,000 new long term care beds over the next decade. However, a new PSW agency was formed under the former government that could destabilize home care providers and increase the precarious nature of work performed by CLAC members in the sector. We will work with the new government to see this new agency dissolved and to mitigate ongoing issues.
· More Hands-On Care in Hospitals and Long Term Care
Hallway medicine in hospitals and staffing levels in long term care facilities have reached a critical point. Government action is required to address how and where care is delivered in Ontario. We will be working to ensure you can provide care to patients safely and with dignity.
We are committed to improving the lives and workplaces of all CLAC members through a productive relationship with Ontario’s new government.
If you have any questions or concerns about what the election may mean for you and your fellow members, please do not hesitate to contact your CLAC representative.
