CLAC Training Corner

 Last year, in response to requests from members, CLAC developed a Medical Gas Piping and Systems Installation Examination Preparation Class for plumbers and steamfitters/pipefitters working in the medical gas field.

Successful completion of a Canadian Standards Association (CSA)-approved class is one of the requirements to write the CSA certification exam. This certification is a requirement and ensures journeypersons working on medical gas piping installations have the skills to complete the work safely and securely in all construction and maintenance operations in the hospital construction industry.

The five-day class was developed by CLAC with the support of external experts with direct industry knowledge, including two of its signatory employers, Besseling Mechanical Inc. and J.M.R. Electric Ltd. CLAC thanks the teams from Besseling and J.M.R. for their significant contributions to the development process.

The curriculum was submitted to CSA in late 2017 and received official approval in April, at which time the CSA noted the quality of CLAC’s curriculum. CLAC is now one of three CSA-approved providers Canada-wide for this class.

The class involves five days of face-to-face training, where participants spend a minimum of 32 hours learning how to navigate CSA Z7396-1 Standard, and a further four hours of practical/hands-on training on brazing/purging procedures. Participants also completed preclass assessments and have access to a practice exam prior to writing the certification exam.

The first class was held June 11-15 at the Cambridge Member Centre. There were eight participants, including CLAC members from Besseling Mechanical and J.M.R. Electric, and a participant from one of our partners, Pre-Apprenticeship Training Institute. The course was delivered by coinstructors Ben Veel and Marla Robinson, who were also involved in the development of the curriculum.

All eight participants successfully passed the class and are now preparing to write the CSA certification exam. We wish them the best of luck!

CLAC already has demand for upcoming classes. CSA Z7396-1 Standard is a National Standard of Canada, and CLAC members across Canada may participate to prepare for the certification exam.

CLAC has Working at Heights (WAH) Refresher training openings across Ontario. Our program will provide you with a new three-year certificate, even if you took the training with another approved training provider. We will be in contact with your employer within six months of your WAH expiry to remind you to update your certificate.
