Wednesday, May 10, 2023 CLAC Supports Members Affected by Alberta Wildfires News Edmonton—CLAC stands ready to support its Alberta members as wildfires have forced nearly 30,000 people from their homes in the past week. “CLAC is committed to strong communities and will work to support our members during this difficult time,” says Dennis Perrin, Prairies director. Any CLAC members affected by the fires can contact their member centre for assistance. As of Tuesday morning, approximately 90 wildfires were reported in the province, 25 of them listed as out of control. Reception centres are operating in Edmonton and Calgary to help evacuees and arrange for shelter. The provincial government is providing financial aid for eligible residents consisting of a one-time payment of $1,250 per adult and $500 per dependent child. Visit alberta.ca for more information. The federal government has said it will work with the Red Cross to set up a matching fund to assist people affected by the fires. “We are encouraged to see all levels of government and political parties working together to support the emergency response,” Perrin says.
