Care Calgary Contractors Vote Unanimously in Favour of First Agreement

Calgary—Contractors employed by Care Calgary Inc. voted unanimously in favour of a first collective agreement setting out improved terms and conditions for their work and remuneration.

The contractors joined Logistics, Manufacturing, and Allied Trades Union, CLAC Local 56, in December 2019, and negotiations for a first agreement began in January 2020, concluding a year later. The tentative settlement was ratified on February 5, 2021.

The 25-month agreement includes many provisions that were previously not set out, including hours of work, scheduling, booking time off, and the maintenance of equipment and vans. The 37 contractors will also see wage increases.

Care Calgary specializes in providing accessible transportation services for ambulatory and wheelchair-bound passengers. The contractors provide door-to-door and shared-ride services in the Calgary area. Their work is contracted out by Access Calgary, which falls under the Calgary Transit Authority.
