Cantex Employees Secure Annual Wage Increases with New Contract

Penticton, BC—Employees of Cantex-Okanagan Construction Ltd., a road building and construction contractor working primarily in the Okanagan region, unanimously ratified a three-year collective agreement providing them with annual wage increases and other improvements.

The employees, who work as lead hands, labourers, truck drivers, and operators, are represented by Construction and Allied Workers Union, CLAC Local 68. The union has represented them since 1998.

The new contract provides employees with an 8 percent increase to wages in the first year of the agreement followed by 3.5 percent annual increases in years two and three. The contract also includes improvements to a number of allowances and premiums.

“This is a solid agreement negotiated by the union bargaining committee, as evidenced by the membership’s unanimous endorsement,” says Jim Oostenbrink, regional director of CLAC’s Kelowna Member Centre. “It provides for members’ wage needs to help them keep ahead of inflation and allows the company to remain competitive in a tight labour market.”
