Building Communities Is Back!

Twice per year, CLAC awards donations of $1,000, $1,500, or $2,500 to local causes nominated by members. All causes and amounts are selected at random from qualified nominations.

Due to the pandemic, CLAC suspended its Building Communities program for 2020 to focus efforts on helping members. The program has resumed for 2021, and members can submit nominations for the first draw, to be held in June. Nominations are due May 15.

Safe Haven Foundation in Calgary, nominated by Bryan Batovanja, a Local 63 member employed by AECOM Maintenance Contractors Ltd., won a $2,500 donation in the December 2019 draw.

“Founded in 1996, Safe Haven Foundation is a registered nonprofit charity whose mission is to help give homeless and at-risk teenage girls a future,” says Bryan. “It provides them with a safe haven from which to work through their issues, complete their education, and learn valuable life skills, allowing them to become self-sufficient, contributing members to society. The foundation fosters an environment where girls feel believed in, cared for, challenged, respected, and accountable as they strive to meet the demands of adulthood.”
