Borea Construction Employees Ratify Agreement Providing Solid Increases

Calgary—Employees of Borea Construction ULC ratified a 19-month collective agreement providing them with a number of solid increases across the board.

The employees are represented across Alberta by Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 63. The union has represented them since 2019.

The new contract, ratified by 87.5 percent of employees, provides them with wage increases of approximately three percent across the wage grid and introduces new wage categories for equipment operators and surveyors. Increases to employer pension contributions and benefits were also negotiated along with solid increases to the living-out allowance and daily travel provisions.

Borea is currently building eight wind and solar projects across the province: Lanfine wind project, Forty Mile wind project, Sharp Hills wind project, Jenner wind project, Whitla 2 & 3 wind project, East Strathmore solar project, Strathmore solar project, and Enchant solar project.

The company is expected to start another couple of projects this year or in 2023. Currently, approximately 100 Local 63 members are working on the projects. This number will hit a peak of 700 to 800 members this summer.

“Our members employed by Borea have made solid gains in a number of areas with this new contract,” says Randy Klassen, CLAC regional director of the union’s Calgary Member Centre. “The bargaining committee did an excellent job assessing the needs of our members, as evidenced by the high percentage who voted in favour of the agreement. For the company, the settlement will help them attract workers in an increasingly competitive labour market.”
