Best Practices: How to Navigate Your STO Portal Account

As an apprentice in Ontario, your Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) Portal account is an important tool for managing your apprenticeship. You can keep your account and Registered Training Agreement (RTA) up to date, which helps prevent delays with school offers and completing your apprenticeship.

What can you do in the STO Portal?

The STO Portal gives you secure access to several online services. Apprentices can access training agreements when needed, use digital signatures, apply for an apprenticeship program, update school preferences, and change sponsors. You can also update your address and phone numbers through your user profile.

You need a My Ontario Account to access the STO Portal. If you are already a registered Ontario apprentice, make sure you access your existing record rather than starting over. When creating your My Ontario Account, use the same email address that was used to register your training agreement.

Plus, when you’ve reached the end of your apprenticeship and are ready to write your exam, you can now schedule and pay you exam fees through your STO Portal account!

Why should you check your RTA?

One of the most important things to review is your list of training agreements. If you previously changed employers or sponsors, make sure old training agreements have been cancelled and only the correct agreement remains active.

Having more than one active agreement can create problems later. It may affect school offers or cause delays when you are ready to complete your apprenticeship.

When your completion application is submitted to STO, multiple records showing under your active agreements will need to be cleaned up before you can be marked as a Completed Apprentice. This may also delay the approval process for apprentices preparing for an on-site exam.

Make your STO Portal part of your routine

Don’t wait until the end of your apprenticeship to discover an issue. Log in from time to time and make sure your information is accurate.

Remember to:

Check that your active training agreement is correct. You should only see your current sponsor listed under the Agreements tab.

If you see any old sponsors (employers) listed under the Agreements tab, start the termination request under the old training agreement.

Keep your address and phone numbers up to date.

Manage your schooling preferences. Make sure that you have at least one school listed, but ideally two.

Use the email address STO already has on file when accessing your existing account.

Contact STO if you need to update information that cannot be changed online.
