Back to School!
Tips and guidelines for apprentices as they head into the classroom
Apprenticeship training looks a lot different than your typical back-to-school season. As a registered apprentice, you’re more concerned about budgeting and returning to work after class.
Did you know?
- Classes are usually offered 12-18 months after your last block or training agreement registration date.
- Offers for school can be impacted by availability, class size and urgency to register.
- Just because you got an offer doesn’t mean you’re registered—you need to follow the instructions and take care of it right away! Some schools are filling up within 2-3 hours.
Are you ready for your upcoming block of schooling?
Here are some best practices on how to get ready for school:
Check your junk mail — Emails from the Ministry typically end up there, including your EI reference code.
Apply for EI — Budgeting is your key to success! When you get your offer, you need to jump on it right away. That means that you’ll need to have your costs covered, including tuition and school administration fees. So, start your EI application! You’ll need a copy of your record of employment and EI reference code to start this. You receive a copy of your EI reference code from the Ministry in your class confirmation email. Other grants and incentives are available to you after completing your schooling. Check out Money For You to find out more information!

Review your logbook and trade curriculum — You’re used to working with your hands, but getting in the habit of reviewing these resources will help prepare you for the two-three months in class.
Is this your first time attending school?
Don’t forget to check out additional information from your college. Most schools provide an orientation prior to or on your first day of class but you can find a lot of the information on the school site.
