Alternative Study Support for Apprentices

Everyone thinks and learns differently and that especially applies to preparing to write an exam. There are a lot of resources out there to help prepare for your in-class training and C of Q exam. The CLAC Apprenticeship team has pooled together traditional and non-traditional supports that you may not have thought about using to prepare for in-class training or your C of Q exam.

Review your Logbook (Training Standard) and course curriculum

- Look up your trade on the STO website

Non-Traditional Study Supports

Check out trade-specific YouTube videos – it’s a free visual resource if you are that type of learner! We highlighted one content creator in our last Apprentice Highlight but there are lots more out there!
Download content as audio files or audio books – there are apps out there to help transfer PDF files (like your Logbook or Exam Prep guides) into audio files, including built-in tools through Adobe
Get organized – it might seem like an obvious thing to do but it can quickly become the support that falls to the side and might be why you feel like you’re scrambling closer to the exam.
- Habit-Forming guides can be an amazing resource to learn what works for you and your learning style – check out the strategy guide written by James Clear or if you’re a podcast listener check out his episode with Brene Brown.
- Download a free study planner like the ones found in the STO Exam Prep Guide (page 34 & 35)
Download trade specific apps
- Dakota Test Prep offers Red Seal apps for Electrical (309A) and Plumber (306A)
  - Available on iPhone and Android devices
  - Includes exam questions you can do on the fly!
- CSA Reader app (Electrical 309A)
- Carpenter practice test you can open on your phone
- Skills Ontario’s free app to explore the trades and other resources to succeed in the trades
