A Heartwarming Experience

Organizing and attending Local 302’s annual general meeting provided a chance to connect with the true cornerstones of the healthcare sector

By Amanda DeBoer, Administrative Assistant, Grimsby Member Centre

As the administrative assistant to our regional representative team, I recently had the incredible opportunity to plan and attend this year’s Local 302 annual general meeting (AGM)—from selecting the venue and coordinating the menu to organizing the prizes. Stepping into the world of labour relations, this was so much more than planning an event. It was a chance to connect with the true cornerstones of the healthcare sector: hardworking members.

Working in the healthcare sector means facing daily trials—whether it’s the physical demands of the work, the emotional weight of caring for others, or the constant balancing act of providing excellent care under ever-changing circumstances. Yet, despite these challenges, front-line members continue to show perseverance, grace, and empathy in everything they do.

Seeing your strength and dedication reminded me of why CLAC’s work matters so deeply. It’s about walking alongside workers—celebrating their contributions, standing up for their rights, and ensuring their workplaces reflect the respect they deserve.

What made the experience even more meaningful was the privilege of working alongside CLAC’s team of healthcare representatives. Their role is not without its own tribulations. They advocate for members, navigate complex workplace issues, and manage the emotional challenges that come with supporting those who give so much of themselves.

Watching them interact with long-standing members was truly inspiring. The warm smiles, heartfelt hugs, and genuine appreciation exchanged spoke volumes about the mutual respect built over years of trust and teamwork. Witnessing those connections was inspiring. It underscored the depth of commitment representatives have to the people they serve and the confidence you and your fellow members place in them.

The evening itself was a meaningful celebration filled with gratitude, camaraderie, and laughter. It was heartwarming to witness healthcare professionals coming together to share stories, celebrate accomplishments, and simply enjoy each other’s company.

For me, as someone who hopes to one day become a representative and serve members directly, the AGM was both motivating and reaffirming. I walked away with a deeper appreciation for the dedication of both members and representatives. It was an honour to play a small part in creating a space that celebrated the people who care for others every single day—an experience I’ll carry with me as I continue to grow my career with CLAC.
