T-T-T-Tired

Are you tired on the job? If so, you’re not alone.

Twenty-seven percent of Canadian workers say they are tired most days or even every day in a typical work week. We all know that fatigue is dangerous, both at work and on the way to and from the job.

5 Fatigue Effects

1. Impairment similar to that caused by alcohol

2. Decreased productivity

3. Decreased self-control, meaning those dealing with customers or other staff may find it harder to be civil

4. Increased risk of obesity and depression

5. Increased risk of workplace or automobile accident

Fatal Fatigue

The American Automobile Association found that drivers who get fewer than seven hours of sleep are much more likely to be involved in an accident. The less sleep, the greater the risk.


  • 6-7 hours of sleep – 1.3 X greater risk
  • 5-6 hours of sleep – 1.9 X greater risk
  • 4-5 hours of sleep – 4.3 X greater risk
  • Less than 4 hours of sleep – 11.5 X greater risk

  • 26% blame home stress.
  • 9% blame physical health problems.

Who’s Tired?


  • 18-22% of workers with children are tired every day vs. 12% of those without children.
  • 15% of women never go to work tired vs. 29% of men.

6 Ways to Combat Fatigue

1. Cut the caffeine, especially after dinner.

2. Go screen-free for an hour before bed.

3. Stick with a regular sleep schedule.

4. Create a bedtime ritual.

5. Sleep in a dark, comfortable room.

6. Manage your stress.
