7 Career Tips You Can Ignore

Looking for work? Don't follow bad career advice.
  1. “Don’t say anything or complain.” No one likes a whiner, but do let your boss know about your accomplishments and alert them to problems—especially if they concern safety.
  2. “Here’s the one way to get ahead.” There’s rarely just one way to advance your career. Be open to other opportunities.
  3. “Fake it until you make it.” Be confident in your abilities, but don’t be afraid to let others know you don’t have the answer but you will find out. Being humble is better than being overconfident and making mistakes.
  4.  “Just be yourself.” Workplaces expect you to behave a certain way, and failure to meet expectations can cost you your job.
  5. "Here’s what you need to do.” When someone outside of your career tries to give you advice, you’re often better off ignoring them. Seek advice from someone who’s been successful at what you do, but also listen to your intuition.
  6. “Follow your passion.” Not everything you’re passionate about makes a fulfilling career. It’s better to be curious about things you don’t know and become a lifelong learner
  7. “Find work-life balance.” Instead, find an employer that cares about you and your coworkers.
