4 Mistakes We All Make at Work

Use them as an opportunity for reflection, learning, and collaboration
  1. Aha Mistakes – This is when you realize the way you’ve been doing a task has been wrong all along. Often, you will experience embarrassment and be tempted to ignore that you’ve been making a mistake and hope no one notices. Instead, reflect on why you made the mistake, what you can do to fix it, and if it created harm, how you can repair it.
  2. Sloppy Mistakes – These are mistakes where you know better. You may have been rushed, tired, doing too many things at once, or perhaps feeling burned out. Don’t dwell on it but do identify the root cause of the mistake, and see what steps you can take to ensure that you don’t repeat it next time.
  3. Stretch Mistakes – These mistakes happen when you are pushing yourself too hard. Don’t beat yourself over it too much. It’s good to stretch boundaries of what you can do, provided you do so safely. It’s a great way to grow. Unlike a sloppy mistake, take time to reflect on a stretch mistake so that you learn from the experience.
  4. High-Stakes Mistakes – These are the ones to avoid because they have significant consequences. Often, high-stakes mistakes happen because of pressure you may feel you are under. It’s crucial that you acknowledge the mistake and share it with your team or boss to limit the damage. Hiding them could lead to even worse outcomes.

When you make a mistake, no matter which kind, you may feel lonely and vulnerable. The temptation is to retreat or shut down.

Instead, use it as an opportunity for reflection, learning, and collaboration with your coworkers. The sharing of perspectives will lead to different ways of thinking and help grow everyone’s knowledge and skills.
