Mental Health First Aid | Online & Distance Learning
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis.

Course participants will learn how to recognize signs that a person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis and encourage that person to:
- Talk about declines in their mental well-being
- Discuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improved mental well-being
- Reach out to these supports
- Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis
- Use MHFA actions to maintain one’s own mental well-being
The course is divided into three modules. For each module, a participant must have access to their own PC or laptop. Please let us know if you have questions about this.
Module 1: Online (2 hours)
You will receive a link to the online course 2 weeks prior to your distance learning date. You can complete it at any time but it must be prior to the start of your distance learning classroom modules
- Introduction to the course
- Introduction to MHFA actions
Module 2: Distance Learning Classroom Day 1 (3.5 hours)
- Practice applying MHFA actions to situations of declining mental well-being
- Guidelines for MHFA conversations with people from diverse cultures and members of the LGBTQ+ community
Module 3: Distance Learning Classroom Day 2 (3.5 hours)
- Discussion on using MHFA actions for self-care
- Practice using MHFA actions in crisis situations
Duration/Format: 9-hour blended model consisting of:
- A 2-hour self-directed online module (Module 1)
- Two 3.5-hour virtual
classroom modules (Modules 2 & 3)
