Meeting Needs at Oak Ridges
A growing influx of seniors requiring more complex care has presented challenges for the staff at Oak Ridges Retirement Community. But Local 304 members are up to the task of meeting residents’ daily needs
With the beautiful parklands and lakes of the Oak Ridges Moraine nearby and all the amenities of Toronto within easy reach, what’s not to like?
If you’re one of the seniors living at Oak Ridges Retirement Community in Richmond Hill, Ontario, part of the Greater Toronto Area, you not only have a great facility and gorgeous surroundings but a caring staff of Local 304 members meeting your daily needs.
Local 304 was certified to represent the workers at Oak Ridges in March 2016. It took two years, but the group finally reached agreement with management on their first contract earlier this year and now have a much more secure workplace as a result.
The agreement includes much-needed wage improvements for all classifications, with some receiving a 17 percent increase, as well as the addition of paid healthcare benefits, a health spending account, and enrolment in the CLAC Pension Plan.
The strong team of nearly 60 members are employed by the home as housekeepers, dishwashers, concierges, personal support workers, maître d’s, cooks, activity aides, sous chefs, and RPNs.
The home, which opened seven years ago, has seen a growing influx of seniors requiring more complex care, which has presented challenges for the staff. But they remain focussed on securing the needs of the residents they care for.
Now, with a recently ratified first collective agreement, they’re secure in the knowledge that their needs are being met, too.
