Ontario Construction: Local Board Updates

Local 6: The board met in early December. Brent Smith and Christian Blanchard represented the local at the CLAC National Convention in Kitchener in October and gave a full report. The board thanked them for their efforts. The local recently made a donation to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, which was gratefully received. We have booked the Local 6 annual general meeting and golf tournament for June 9, 2018, at Century Pines Golf Club. We continue to have a great turnout year after year, so please keep your eye out for the notices and get a team together.

Local 52: The board last met on March 1. Local staff are busy organizing new groups of employees, which include Platinum Power Group, Montana Electric, and MCA Contracting. Currently, staff are working on 16 rounds of negotiations, including nine renewals and seven first collective agreements. Renewal negotiations are being held for DSK Electric, MCA Contracting, Vic’s Fabrication, Dominion Construction, City Electric, North Frontenac Telephone Company, Matheson Construction, Montana Electric, Northec Construction, Upper Canada Glass, Global Fire, Dael Thermal Group, Maple Reinders Construction, B&J Contracting, Lafarge Brechin, and Lafarge Coldwater. Settlements have been achieved with CEC Services, Rock Electric, and Onyx Electric. Staff expressed appreciation to the Local 52 board members for supporting the work of the local and representing its members at these meetings.

Local 53: The board reminds local members that our annual meeting will be in June. The meeting’s location and time will be finalized and announced soon. Come out to hear about the activities of the local, the annual financial report, and to vote for board members. We will also discuss our membership stats: Local 53 grew in membership by 19 percent in 2017 compared to 2016. We welcome our newest members, from the sheet metal division of Shamrock Mechanical based in Lucan. Our annual winter celebration of golf took place on February 24 with the CLAC Local 53 Indoor Golf Tournament, held in Tecumseh.
