Building Communities Is Back!

Twice per year, CLAC awards donations of $1,000, $1,500, or $2,500 to local causes nominated by members. All causes and amounts are selected at random from qualified nominations.

Due to the pandemic, CLAC suspended its Building Communities program for 2020 to focus efforts on helping members. The program has resumed for 2021, and members can submit nominations for the first draw, to be held in June. Nominations are due May 15.

Two causes were nominated by Local 68 members won during the draw held back in December 2019.

909 Peregrine Squadron in Kelowna, nominated by Ian Gilchrist (PCL Construction Westcoast Inc.) received a $1,000 donation. “This youth development organization builds the leaders of tomorrow,” says Ian. “The squadron was officially formed in 2003 and named after the endangered peregrine falcon. Threatened with extinction in the 1970s, it was recently reintroduced to the Okanagan Valley. The 909 Peregrine Squadron is open to kids between 12 and 18 years of age who are looking for a challenge, have an interest in aviation and aerospace, and want to learn leadership skills and make new friends.

Creative Centre Society for Mental Wellness in Abbotsford, nominated by Mike Halamic (Stuart Olson Contracting Ltd.), received a $1,500 donation. “Creative Centre Society is a nonprofit organization serving Chilliwack and surrounding areas for over 30 years, focussing on healthy living,” says Mike. “It provides rehabilitation and recovery-based programs and services, which support people who live with a severe and persistent mental illness. These diverse programs are designed to change and meet the ongoing needs of the members and aim toward enhancing independence for community living.”
