Vanrooyen Employees Secure Wage Gains, Other Improvements with New Contract
Woodstock, ON—Employees of VanRooyen Earthmoving Ltd., based in Woodstock, have overwhelmingly ratified a new three-year collective agreement providing them with wage gains and other improvements.
The employees are represented by Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 53. The union has represented the employees since 2013.
The new contract, ratified by 98 percent of those voting, includes wage increases of up to 6.1 percent over the term as well as an increase to employer contributions to the pension plan to 8 percent. Other improvements were made to employees’ benefits plan, mileage reimbursement, and automatic overtime pay for work on Saturdays.
“The union bargaining committee did an excellent job identifying the priorities of the membership,” says Sonya Dean, CLAC representative. “They worked cooperatively with the employer to negotiate a strong settlement during these difficult and uncharted times. Despite having to find new ways to negotiate during COVID-19, the committee was adaptive and continued to keep the needs of their fellow members in mind throughout the process. Their hard work is evident in the strong vote of acceptance for the contract.”
The 80 union members employed by VanRooyen include heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and labourers. The company provides earth-moving and large-site preparation services, with recent work in Waterdown, London, and Milton.
