Ontario Construction Local Board Updates

Local 6

Local 6 had a busy year in bargaining, particularly in the ready-mix sector. Six agreements were negotiated this year: Tor-Crete Ltd., Ontario Ready-Mix – Hamilton, Hanson Ready-Mix, Inter County Concrete, Tri-City Ready-Mix, and Cross Country Ready Mix. We have seen some real difficulties in this industry, specifically recruitment/retention and wage rates. Local 6 is at the forefront of tackling these problems and hopes to see needed improvements in the next three years.

The Local 6 general contractors’ agreement is up for renegotiation in the spring, as are a number of other Local 6 agreements. The union looks forward to negotiating on behalf of you to champion your needs at the bargaining table. Darren Schutten will be joining the Grimsby Member Centre as a representative while Alex Kuiper moves to CLAC’s Chatham Member Centre.

Local 52

Local 52 is pleased to welcome new members employed by Pave Krete, First Nations Industrial Systems, and NUNA Contracting. Currently, representatives are working with union bargaining committees negotiating 12 new agreements, 6 of which are first agreements. Settlements have been achieved with six companies so far: Kile Contracting, Industrial Floor Systems, Mapleridge Mechanical, NUNA Contracting, Penalta Group, and Valley Mechanical.

The local is pleased to announce that Colene Jansen has been hired as a representative to help meet members’ needs as the local continues to grow and add members. At its recent meeting, which was also the local’s annual general meeting, the board welcomed Landon Teel (B&J Contracting) as a member of the board.

Local 53

The Local 53 Board welcomed three newly elected members at the fall quarterly meeting: Shane Grant (Fortress Concrete Forming Inc.), George Pratt (J.M.R. Electric Ltd.), and Dave Knapp (Graceview Enterprises Inc.). Over the fall, the local also welcomed new members employed by Rose City Electric in Windsor, Gordon Ruth and Company Ltd. in London, Young Electrical Services Ltd. in Windsor, and Taylor Electric Inc. in Belle River. Overall, membership in Local 53 continues to climb, reaching 1,462 as of this report.

The board welcomes all CLAC members to participate in our annual fundraising event in support of the Downtown Mission of Windsor. The Indoor Virtual Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, February 29, in Tecumseh.

Representatives Roger Grootenboer and Alex Kuiper have moved recently. Roger joined the Cambridge Member Centre team in November while Alex joined the team in Chatham in December.
