Three Ontario Residents Win CLAC Scholarships

DATE: October 19, 2011

Mississauga, ON—Danielle Decloe, Victoria Thorburn, and Mandi Lee were each awarded a $1,500 CLAC scholarship to use toward their post-secondary education.

Each year, CLAC awards twelve scholarships to members, their spouses, children, and grandchildren.

Danielle Decloe has a four-year degree from the University of Guelph in adult development and is currently enrolled in the one-year Therapeutic Recreation program at Georgian College in Orillia. She is an activity aid employed by Holland Christian Homes and is a member of the Health Care and Service Workers Union, Local 304.

Danielle’s close relationship with her grandparents had a strong influence in her academic choices, and helping seniors at Holland Christian Homes has brought her great satisfaction. Her long term goal is to work in an adult day program using her skills and knowledge to help seniors stay in their own homes longer while enjoying a high quality of life. She is thankful to CLAC for her scholarship as it will help defray the cost of tuition and study materials.

Victoria Thorburn is enrolled in Western University in London and hopes to become a dentist. She is a member of the Niagara Health Care and Service Workers Union, Local 302, and has worked as a server at The Orchards Retirement Residence for three years, where she plans to return during summer vacations.

Mandi Lee is a personal support worker at Rivera Retirement Lodge and is a member of Grand River Health Care Employees Union, Local 305. She serves her fellow members both as a steward and a Local 305 board member. She is currently enrolled in the Practical Nursing program at Mohawk College in Hamilton.
