Langley, BC—Approximately 200 bags stuffed with toothpaste, soap, socks, mittens, and other basics were handed out to disadvantaged populations yesterday during the third annual New Year Necessities Drive, sponsored by CLAC and South Fraser Community Services Society.
“While most non-profits have an abundance of resources donated to them in December, the first couple of months of the new year are often barren and sometimes depressing months for disadvantaged populations,” says Audrey Wilkinson, CLAC BC representative and coordinator of the drive. “We wanted to reach out and help during these months for that reason.”
The society’s employees are members of Service, Health and Allied Workers’ Union, Local 501. “It has been a real joy supporting the work our members are doing,” says Wilkinson. “They are truly special people who do amazing work.”
South Fraser Community Services Society is a non-profit, charitable organization providing basic services and support to disadvantaged populations. Local 501 members are involved with fifteen different programs at the centre including a twenty-four-hour community drop-in centre and shelter, a free confidential health clinic, and a food bank and support lounge dedicated to those living with HIV and HCV.
