CLAC Apprentices Win Multiple Awards

DATE: November 30, 2010

Edmonton—CLAC apprentices enjoyed a successful evening at the 10th annual Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) celebration in Edmonton winning a number of awards. Close to 300 Alberta apprentices spanning 28 diverse trades were recognized for their individual achievements. Each apprentice was rewarded with a $1,000 scholarship, provided by industry stakeholders.

Eric Costa of Edwin Parr Composite Community School was recognized as an outstanding electrical motor systems technician. Eric was a recipient of the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Scholarship while employed by CLAC contractor Pyramid Corporation.

Similarly, two carpentry apprentices—Jeffrey McKarney and Grayson Seeckts of Harry Ainlay Composite High School—were acknowledged for their efforts and dedication to their respective trade. Both individuals work for PCL Builders, Inc., another CLAC signatory contractor.

This year’s recipient of the CLAC RAP Scholarship was James Hegedus. He is engaged in RAP through Holy Trinity Academy in Drayton Valley and currently works for the DV Meter Division of Pyramid Corporation.

Since its inception in 1991, RAP has successfully trained thousands of apprentices in various trades and across many sectors. According to the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board’s 2009–2010 Annual Report, there were 69,904 registered apprentices in the province, an increase of 131 percent since 1998. From 2004–2009, almost 50,000 students have become certified journeypersons.
