The Fraser Institute's recent report, Labour Relations Laws in Canada and the United States, is a welcome contribution to the ongoing discussion about the role and importance of unions, workers, and employers and the laws that facilitate their relationships. The report’s overarching conclusion and bias is that it is good public policy to institute laws that diminish the ability of unions to represent workers. But behind the report’s number crunching, graphs, and research lies a flawed understanding of the purpose of labour unions and their contributions to a productive and flourishing society.
